Mabel Hartzell House Tour – Maid’s Bedroom
Matthew Earley was a tanner by trade and his family was fairly affluent. The Earleys had a maid to help out with house chores during the week. A small bedroom was provided for her above the kitchen. A steep, narrow stairway provided access through a trap door in the hallway floor outside the bedroom to the kitchen below.
A rope bed is of interest in this room. The ropes would be pulled tight each night to provide a firm base for the mattress. This tightening of the ropes is the source of the saying “Sleep tight”.
The room includes a small window for ventilation and a table and chair for writing letters and personal time.
